Tracie and I "met" on Twitter many, many moons ago but oddly enough we first met in person about a year ago. It was at a taping of Parents Talk at the Rogers television studio while waiting to get our make-up done. We chatted for a few minutes before realizing we followed each other on Twitter and now we tweet all the time. Funny how random things seem in the world of social media.
WHO?
Tracie is the co-owner of Help We've Got Kids. In addition to raising
her two children, volunteering on several non-profit boards and trying to
keep the business running, Tracie is on a never-ending quest for balance
and sanity.....can it even exist?
WHAT?
Help We've Got Kids is a local, online directory for all the
things parents need for their kids. Tracie's blog is a personal take on
running a business, running a household and all the issues, concerns and
comedies that those entail.

Mommy, can you buy me that toy?
How many times have you taken your kids to a toy store looking for gifts for their friends and all they want to buy are toys for themselves? It happens to me all the time and it drives me bonkers! They act as though they have never seen a toy in their life. That's when the mom guilt sets in. Have I totally spoiled my children? Or have I failed to teach them about the concept of money and that it doesn't actually grow on trees? Teaching young children about money is undeniably a life skill that has been overlooked in our household. Until now.
Learning Money with Leo
Learning Money with Leo is an iPad app that has been designed with the input of early childhood education experts and parents. It features a variety of kid-friendly and interactive games to teach your children about earning, saving, and spending money. As your child plays each game, he or she can earn coins, which can be used to buy stickers for his or her very own virtual sticker book. Available for FREE from iTunes in both English and French, the purpose of this app is to:- Provide kids with an introduction to the concepts and value of money
- Teach kids about earning, saving and spending money
- Help kids develop a foundation of basic money skills that they can build upon as they get older

By now, I am sure most of you have heard about pink slime, otherwise known as Lean Beef Trimmings. Jamie Oliver was one of the first people to talk about pink slime when he demonstrated its production to parents and children in his Food Revolution series last year. In the video, he mentions how 70% of America's ground beef contains leftover cow parts, the kind that's unfit for human consumption and is often thrown out or used for dog food. But don't worry. This 'meat,' which contains e.coli and salmonella, has been treated with ammonia. You know, the poisonous chemical compound that has been deemed corrosive and hazardous.
Since then, McDonald's, Taco Bell, and school districts across the US have rejected pink slime, and yet the USDA continues to offer it to children throughout their schools. In an effort to educate and activate people across the US as part of the mission of the Food Revolution, Jamie and his team have built a website www.stoppinkslime.org to showcase all of the information about this issue and provides a link to the Health Petition started by Bettina Siegel of The Lunch Tray. As of the publication of this post, 246,597 out of the required 300,000 signatures have been obtained.
I have included the aforementioned video below for your displeasure. If you have a weak stomach, consider yourself forewarned.

Calling all Ontarians! With this week's record-breaking warm temperatures, it might be a little hard to accept the fact that we could be returning to single-digit temperatures next week. To help banish the winter blahs this month, Seattle’s Best Coffee and Mac’s Convenience Stores have put together a promotion that will help Ontarians save time and money. From now until March 25, you can pick up any size Seattle’s Best Coffee for only $1 (plus tax) at your local Mac’s store. Did I mention you can get ANY SIZE? It's a great opportunity to enjoy delicious-tasting premium coffee on the go or choose from their hot beverage selection, including Tazo® tea, hot chocolate and cappuccino.
Seattle’s Best Coffee has created a new Level System that uses numbers and bold colours to show the roast of each blend. Level 1, for example, is mild, light and crisp and Level 5 is bold, dark and intense. You can even find a Level 3 whole bean smooth and full-flavored coffee as well as a decaf variety. They also offer a Level 4 Fair Trade Organic blend that is rich, elegant and earthy. Not sure which would be your favorite? Take advantage of Seattle’s Best Coffee Special at Mac’s by heading to a Mac’s store near you.

I'd like to take a minute to introduce you to the newest member of the family:
Ain't she a beauty? Such soft leather interior and a shiny complexion, she looks tough on the outside but really she's just a softy on the inside. She and I have already hit it off. Yes, it's been a bit of adjustment when compared to the cabin space of the minivan that my husband now drives. But with Uconnect capabilities, 18" aluminum nitrogen-filled wheels and 4-wheel drive, it was practically love at first sight.

Did you know that kitchen organic material makes up approximately 30% of our garbage? Kitchen organics refers to food waste but also includes used tissues and paper towels. By recycling theses organics, we can convert it into compost and help divert it from landfill. Thanks to tiny microorganisms, the waste is eaten to produce carbon dioxide, water and humus, resulting in a natural fertilizer that has been proven by organic gardeners to have several benefits. It can restore soil fertility, help retain ground moisture, control weeds and reduce soil erosion. This is one of the reasons I recycle kitchen organics at home.
Another reason I recycle kitchen organics is to reduce the amount of garbage that gets thrown out. We chose a medium sized garbage bin when we moved to our new house as a reminder that we need to limit waste and to also reduce costs for utility fees related to garbage removal. The one major problem I have experienced is finding sturdy bags that are designed with compost in mind. You know, the kind that won't tear and leave a nasty mess at the bottom of your kitchen waste bin (yuck). So when I was offered a chance to sample the new GLAD Compostable Bags with Odour Guard, I jumped at the opportunity. I received a whole bunch of bags to try out and share, and they came in a big box that I am reusing as a toy box.

This week, my husband and I bought a new vehicle since my husband's truck is pretty old and run down. As a result, we have been looking at ways in which we can reduce our expenses. We decided we could do without our VIP Digital Cable package and go back to basic. The only thing is... there is no more 'basic.'
It turns out that Digital Basic is the smallest package we can get. Small, as in hundreds of channels, which includes Rogers on Demand and 27 timeshifting channels. Most of which we will never watch. Ever.
We could purchase the digital box instead of renting it. It costs about two year's worth of renting.
We could resort to just Netflix but I would miss Mr. D and Republic of Doyle. Mind you, I could always watch them online.
For now, we're sticking with Digital Basic.
Total monthly cost?
$52.49!
I want my analog back.

Earlier last month, my sister-in-law and I attended the grand opening of Yoga Tree Midtown located near Yonge and Eglinton. While my sister-in-law had been to a different Yoga Tree location many times before, this was my first time. In fact, I have never been to a yoga class that wasn't in a regular fitness studio. Doing yoga in a studio designed with yoga in mind is a completely different experience, one that left me with a feeling unlike anything I had felt before, a feeling of utter relaxation and tranquility.
Yoga Tree Midtown is the fourth eco-friendly Yoga Tree studio located in Toronto, just two minutes from the Eglinton subway station. There you will find three large rooms offering multiple classes, either heated or non-heated, shower facilities, a tea lounge, and lockers. Classes range from Gentle Hatha, Hot Yoga, Power Flow, Beginner's and Restorative Yoga.

It’s the middle of our March Break and the sun is shining. The kids are enjoying outdoor activities and had the pleasure of spending a few days with my family in Hamilton. We even paid a visit to my darling niece who is only two months old. In a few weeks, the whole family will reunite to celebrate Easter together and share some tasty treats. We will also partake in our yearly scavenger hunt for chocolate eggs. But this year, we won't just count how many eggs we find. This year, we will also count our blessings.
KINDER eggs and a handmade greeting card will surely bring joy this Easter. |

Do you see them? Off in the distance. They're there. If you look long enough, you'll see the sideways V-shaped flock of geese. Is it spring yet?

Earlier this month, Alliance films released ANIMALS UNITED on DVD, a children's movie featuring the voices of Andy Serkis, Vanessa Redgrave, Jim Broadbent and Stephen Fry. Having been likened to Madagascar, the movie takes place in Africa with the savannah as the beautiful backdrop for this story.
When the African savannah runs dry, Billy, a courageous meerkat, and Socrates, a laid back lion, prepare to go the distance in order to find water. On their journey they cross paths with a rooster named Charles, who tells them of a place where the water still flows. But by the time Charles leads them there, humans have already staked their claim - a local entrepreneur has constructed a dam in order to divert the water to his luxury hotel. Now Billy and Socrates must call in all of their animal friends in order to teach humans a thing or two about sharing the land!

One of my favourite places to visit with the kids has always been the Ontario Science Centre. Mainly because it's really close to home and because teachers get free admission. But also because there is always something to see and do. From their regular exhibits and the KidSpark area to special exhibits and IMAX films, there's plenty of fun to be had by all.
This week at the Ontario Science Centre, families can enjoy special programming in addition to Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees Imax film, which I highly recommend. Here are some of the educational presentations you can expect for March Break 2012:

This year, my daughter is in grade one and is therefore required to bring a lunch to school. While we have every intention to respect boomerang lunch efforts that are being made at school, it becomes increasingly difficult to continue those efforts at home when your daughter never brings home her reusable containers and water bottles. No, wait. I digress. She does bring them home. Eventually.
One of the handiest tips I could offer a parent of a school-ager is to stock up on personalized labels and use them. On everything. I have gotten into the habit of sticking labels onto new items as soon as I get home, whether they are water bottles, school supplies, or clothing. You see, my daughter has a tendency to leave things at school since she needs to rush at the end of the day to catch her bus. But having all of her belongings labeled is reassuring since I know they will make their way home sooner or later.

Aside from the fact that my kids get invited to a gazillion birthday parties each year, I find it particularly stressful trying to find the perfect gift for kids. Unless you know exactly what they want, you could literally spend hours looking for something that may not be age appropriate, or worse, suit their fancy. That's why I'm grateful for Indigo Kids which offers smart gift recommendations for every age.

This Thursday, March 8, Kellogg's is celebrating National Breakfast Day by partnering with Breakfast Clubs of Canada and Breakfast for Learning. Together, they are launching the Share Your Breakfast program with the aim of encouraging Canadians to help children who go without breakfast.
It should come as no surprise that eating a healthy breakfast can help kids boost their performance at school. It can help improve behaviour, reduce absences and tardiness, and increase focus and physical performance. But did you know that 1 in 10 Canadian children live in poverty and are likely to go start the day on empty stomach?
As part of the Share Your Breakfast movement, Kellogg's will be surprising Canadians across the country with free mini-packs of Kellogg's Rice Krispies to help raise awareness about our nation's hungry children. They will also be donating to their National Breakfast Day charity partners. So what does this mean? A bowl for you equals a bowl for a hungry child.
How can you help? Pick up a specialty marked box of Kellogg's cereal in-store, visit breakfast charities directly to make your own donation, tweet your support using the hashtag #shareyourbreakfast or visit www.kelloggs.ca/SYB to learn more.

Many people in my profession will likely agree that supervision duty on blistery cold days like today are, well... slightly unpleasant. The below-freezing temperatures mixed with the wind chill factor dictated that students would remain indoors. But since I had bus duty first thing in the morning, I stayed outside to supervise eight busloads of students during drop-off. I was bundled up from head to toe but didn't have a scarf so my face was exposed to the elements of wind, cold and dry air. And my lips had something to say about that.

March is now upon us and I am very much looking forward to warmer temperatures. Rainy days? Not so much. This is the month, though, where you kind of have to go with the flow. No matter what the weather, it's always handy to be prepared with some activities to keep your preschooler entertained. I am excited to share with you an article I wrote for DisneyJunior.ca called "Developing a Sense of Adventure." In it, you will find some ideas you can try with your little ones that will have them exploring and using their senses while venturing off into a world of fun. Hope you can spare a minute or two and head on over to DisneyJunior.ca!
