Here's hoping this Father's Day is a memorable one! And to all the grads:

Monday served as a special reminder of how wonderful dads can be. You see, my son came down with a fever on Sunday and I felt really bad since I had to attend a bridal shower. My daughter also had a birthday party just down the street that conflicted with the shower. Fortunately, my husband was wonderful enough to take her to the party and tend to our little fella while I mingled with friends old and new. My husband was also kind enough to take a day off work to stay home with our son on Monday. He even managed to get a doctor's appointment later that afternoon. I was so thankful to be able to count on him.

When it comes to Father's Day, I often hesitate about incorporating some sort of activity into my French classes relating to the holiday. You see, a number of my students do not have a father figure in their lives. And it makes me so sad. In some cases, it is due to some terrible tragedy. In other cases, the child has never even known the father. At home, we keep it fairly low key, especially since my father-in-law lost his battle against cancer in 2009. This Father's Day, my husband decided to play a round of early morning golf with a friend. I took the kids to see my mom and dad the day before and enjoyed a laid back afternoon in their backyard watching planes fly by during the annual Hamilton Air Show. I love their backyard. It is very nicely landscaped and they maintain it well. My dad has always been hardworking that way. And I admire him for that and for all the sacrifices he has made for our family.

How did you celebrate Father's Day this year? Did you have a chance to sit down with your little ones to watch Disney Junior episodes featuring fathers and other male role models? We missed them but I love that we can watch Rogers On Demand online. I can take my iPad wherever I go, use my personal hotspot via my iPhone and put on Disney Junior shows such as Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso and Stella and Sam. It's always nice to cuddle up with the kids and watch their favourite shows.

Oh, my! I just realized Father's Day is two days away. This week has been so busy for me that I really haven't had much time to think about ways to celebrate. And seeing as my husband wants to spend the day golfing, then perhaps we can start off the day with a healthy, easy-to-make, Father's Day breakfast à la Dinosaur Train. Here are some neat ideas:

• T-rex Footprint Pancakes – with adult help, children shape the batter into the large three-toed feet of a Tyrannosaurus.  
• Paleontologist Pancakes – make small pancakes, then stack them up 5 or 6 high (maybe putting apple sauce or sour cream between them), and hiding “fossils” between the layers – the fossils being pieces of strawberry, banana slices, chocolate chips, and so on.  
• Stegosaurus Smoothie – a colorful, healthy fruit smoothie made with a blend of yogurt, a frozen banana, and any other fruit you wish. Serve it on a dish with a rim. In the middle of the dish, place a line of triangular fruit pieces – such as pineapple, apples, or cantaloupe. These little fruity triangles will look like the plates on a stegosaurus’ back. 
• Triceratops Eggs – scrambled eggs that have “horns” sticking out of them – made of breadsticks.

If you're kids like to draw, perhaps they can have them illustrate a menu. You can also discuss kitchen safety by pointing out jobs that kids can do and those that are best left to the adults. You can also show them a clip from Gilbert the Junior Conductor in which the Pteranadon Family enjoys eating breakfast on the Dinosaur Train. Then, everyone can gather around to play The Dinosaur Train All Aboard Game where players choose a character – Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, Don, Cory, Tank or Mr. Conductor – and try to move the fastest along the tracks. Speed through the three dinosaur eras: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous along the beautiful scenery. Special Stopwatch spaces will help you get closer to the nest, while Dinosaur Crossing spaces will send you back. The first player to reach the nest area in the center of the board wins.
