Cooking in the kitchen has never been my forté. I do my best and sometimes the meal will come out in a pleasant-looking edible form, but really, I'd rather let my talented husband take care of meal prep. He's extremely good at it, so why not? To my dismay, however, there are nights where he has to work late and dinner is left up to me. Gulp. Thank goodness for Dr. Oetker Frozen Pizzas!
While we prefer to prepare fresh meals for our kids as often as possible, being pressed for time sometimes leaves us with no other recourse than to pull out a frozen meal. If we are all out of frozen lasagne that, ahem, I slaved over one Sunday, I am always relieved if I have a frozen pizza on hand. Cause who doesn't love pizza? One of my favourites is Dr. Oetker's thin-crust Ristorante Pizzas, namely the Pizza Speciale variety. Yum! I also had a chance to try out their Casa di Mama pizzas, which, by the way, has just won the 2011 Best New Product Award as voted by 35,000 Canadians.
Now, Dr. Oetker has a new line called Panebello Bakery Crust Pizza which have an thick, crispy yet soft crust that could only have been created by a master Baker. It is made with a variety of high-quality ingredients and is available in four different varieties: Country Pepperoni, Classic Canadian, Vegetables and Goats Cheese and Bruschetta. When I heated up a couple of Panebello pizzas at work to share with my colleagues as part of our "treat day," it almost immediately disappeared the minute I placed it on the table. They really loved it! I tried one with my family at home and the kids seemed to enjoy it, too. While it was very tasty, I prefer the thin crust of their Ristorante or Casa di Mama pizzas. If you're wondering where you can buy them, they are available at all major grocery retailers across Canada. The suggested retail price is $5.99 to $6.49 but I did see them on sale just a few days ago for $2.99 at Metro!
Want a chance to try all four Panebello varieties? Divine.ca is offering you a chance to win 1 of 5 $500 Home Bakery Bundles! Simply visit Divine.ca from now until June 13, 2011 and you could be the lucky owner of a fabulous prize pack which includes:
- 8 Coupons for two of each of the new Dr. Oetker Panebello pizza varieties (Vegetables and Goats Cheese, Country Pepperoni, Classic Canadian, Bruschetta)
- 1 Breville Toaster Oven
- 1 Pair of Dr. Oetker Oven Mitts
- 1 Dr. Oetker Pizza Cutter
- 1 Williams-Sonoma Pizza Peel
Please visit oetker.ca for further information, including nutritional content and ingredients information.

Before I got married and had kids, I knew that I wanted a big library of children's books so that one day I could read them with my own kids. Being a teacher, I had already built up a nice collection of books for young school-aged children, mainly because I once taught a grade 2/3 split and found some pretty amazing deals for used books on eBay. Then, I had my babies and discovered the joys of board books. Aside from being small enough for infants and toddlers to hold, they are also sturdy enough to withstand tiny hands and I don't have to worry about any of the pages being torn. Plus, you can find some really sweet books such as Marianne Richmond's The Night Night Book.
The book is available at bookstores as well as online, and if you order from Marianne Richmond's online store for $7.95, she can even add a personalized autograph along with a gold sticker. How neat!
About the Author
Marianne Richmond is an award-winning author and illustrator who founded Marianne Richmond Studios, Inc. back in 1991. She also designs greeting cards and other gift products that are adorned with her artistic style. Marianne is the mother of 4 children who serve as inspiration for her stories. You can read about the latest on Marianne's blog as well as connect with her on her Facebook fan page.

“Comfy bed,
all tucked in.
Cozy blanket,
toes to chin.
all tucked in.
Cozy blanket,
toes to chin.
Night night sky.
Night night moon.
Dear tomorrow,
see you soon!”
The Night Night Book is the newest title in Marianne Richmond's ever-growing library. And just like her other stories, such as If I Could Keep You Little..., Richmond uses her artistic talent to bring the story to life. The illustrations in this book were made using acrylic paint on canvas board with collage and remain true to the characteristic whimsy with which Richmond illustrates her stories. From bedroom to bathroom, indoors to outdoors, the pictures accompany each verse which details all of the many things the child encounters during the day to which he must bid adieu at night. The rhyme and rhythm of The Night Night Book make it a pleasure to both read and listen to. It will easily become a favourite bedtime story amongst the little ones and would make a perfect gift for a mom-to-be. It measures about 7" by 7" which is small enough, I think, to include in my next diaper cake creation. All in all, The Night Night Book makes for a wonderful addition to bedtime routines and makes reading fun. It thus earns the Toronto Teacher Mom Seal of Approval!Night night moon.
Dear tomorrow,
see you soon!”

Today, I am sharing with you the first of a series of features on Canadian Mom Bloggers here on Toronto Teacher Mom. For the very first feature, I'd like to introduce you to an old blogging friend of mine. Yes, we go way back. Like almost a year and a half. Meet Wendy a.k.a. Mapsgirl. I first met Wendy last year during my first ever tour of the CN Tower with the lovely ladies from Mom Central Canada. And now, we keep bumping into each other at a bunch of awesome social media events both on and offline. Our kids seem to get along quite well, too, so that's always a bonus.
Wendy is the owner of funny things are everywhere as well as a cartographer, hence the alias. She also happens to be a car seat technician and is very passionate about child car seat safety. As part of her seven-year blogoversary celebration, she will be giving away seven awesome prizes for seven weeks. For week 5, Wendy has teamed up with Safe Kids Canada and Young Drivers of Canada to spread important information on Child Passenger Safety. At the end of the week on June 5, she will be choosing a winner of a True Fit Convertible Car Seat by The First Years. The contest entry form is located at the bottom of her Lucky 7s Week 5 post and you can enter daily. Don't forget to enter her other Lucky 7s giveaways, eh.

With all this rain we've been having, I thought we'd never see some sunshine. It seems most days, after I pick up my kids from daycare, we have to rush indoors to avoid getting wet. All the kids want to do is go outside and play with their next-door neighbour. Is it too much to ask for a little sunshine? I mean, we're very well prepared for it. We have a brand new certified organic sunscreen to try out, courtesy of Green Beaver, doncha know?
Ever since we first sampled Green Beaver Jr. bath products as well as their Green Beaver lip shimmers well over a year ago, we have seen more and more of their products on the shelves of the natural food market where do most of our shopping. You can also find them in our cupboards, too. And now you will find them in my purse and travel bag, namely Green Beaver's chemical-free sunscreen for kids. It has recently been approved by Health Canada. And because it's fragrance-free and biodegradable, and comes in a recyclable tube, it will now be my sunscreen of choice. They also have sunscreen for adults with the same SPF 30 as the kids version but I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two. When I compare the ingredients as listed on their site, the lists are identical. In the end, however, since Green Beaver sunscreen is eco-friendly, safe for kids and proudly Canadian, I hereby declare it the first product to receive the Toronto Teacher Mom Seal of Approval!
When I went out shopping today, I saw the Green Beaver kids lotion in the store window of a new shop that I just love. It's called The 100-Mile Child and it carries mostly Canadian-made and/or local merchandise geared towards kids including eco-friendly toys, organic clothing, and crafts. It's a tiny store but it's jam-packed with lots of neat stuff that you don't see around too often. Located on the Danforth, you can check out their online store Wildminds.ca as well which currently lists the Green Beaver Sunscreen for $21.99. Or, if you plan on heading down to the Danforth this week, the Big Carrot has both the kids and adult lotion on sale for $15.99, which is regularly priced at $19.99, if I can recall correctly.
Update: I just came across Dan Thompson's review on YummyMummyClub.ca and was happy to read his statement that Green Beaver sunscreen is "an excellent formula for the whole family that really delivers excellent protection." Coming from a cosmetic industry specialist such as Dan, it's definitely reassuring to know.
Disclosure: I was sent a sample of the Green Beaver sunscreen for kids to help facilitate this review. The opinions expressed within this post are my own.

Is spring here yet? Didn't really notice much. But then again, I've been too busy playing with my new toys thanks to Nerf by Hasbro. What can I say? It's been great venting my frustrations with the weather by lining up rows of mittens and tuques and blasting them away with my brand-spanking new semi-automatic N-Strike Barricade RV-10. It's so easy to use, even my three-year-old knows how.
Current website price: $21.99 on ToysRus.ca |
Second, be sure the switch is set to the Off position.
Third, rotate the barrel and insert darts completely.
Finally, turn it on and you're ready to go.
If a dart becomes jammed, which we have yet to experience, simply open the jam clearing door and remove the dart. Be sure to close the door or the blaster will not work.
Even though it's recommended for children aged 6 and up, my kids have been able to use it, with adult supervision of course. The only major problem we've had is sharing it! And finding some of the darts that end up in hard-to-find places. Be it known that we only aim at stationary targets and never at people. I am sometimes uneasy when it comes to my kids and 'blasters' of any kind, including water balloons, but this is where a serious conversation comes into play about the safe and appropriate use of such toys. As a kid, though, I remember how much fun we would have playing with water blasters, especially on a hot summer day.
Enter the Super Soaker.
Current website price: $19.99 on ToysRus.ca |
Nerf's Spring 2011 line has certainly come a long way since I was a wee lass. The Super Soaker Thunderstorm is one of their newest products and is a fully automatic water blaster that can send streams of water up to 25 feet away. It comes with a water clip but additional water clips can be bought separately to expedite your drenching efforts. I really like that it is on the smaller side and easy to use. Plus, having an extra water clip saves you from having to take multiple trips to the kitchen to fill up.
Current website price: $32.99 on ToysRus.ca |
This contest is now closed. Scroll down to the end of this post to see who won.
THREE incredibly lucky readers will win a Blast Away Winter prize pack consisting of:
- NERF SUPER SOAKER THUNDERSTORM
- NERF SUPER SOAKER CLIP SYSTEM CANISTERS
- NERF SUPER SOAKER HYDRO CANNON
- NERF NSTRIKE BARRICADE RV-10
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to visit the official Nerf site and browse their catalogue with extreme stealth. Leave a comment on this post with the name of a Nerf product you'd like to have in your possession along with a way to contact you if you win. This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck.

Suddenly Mommy! follows the plight of Anne Marie, an actress turned mom, who wakes up one morning and realizes that motherhood isn't all it's cracked up to be. Donned in a feathered pink boa and a pink flower in her hair, Anne Marie, played by Sheffler herself, shares the inner turmoil she experiences after getting married, becoming a mom and a step-mom. Between the tantrums and the fussing, she finds herself longing to be who she once was - a young, attractive career woman who didn't fuss and have tantrums.
The stage is set with a children's slide, a rocking fish and a suitcase to the right and a vanity desk, chair, a pair of black pumps and a white dress reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe to the left. Throughout the play, Anne Marie transitions from an immature mother who complains that being a mom is all about the food prep, to a woman on the brink of a nervous breakdown who just can't take it anymore and wants to run away from her life, leaving it up to her sister to take care of her children for three days. She reenacts all of the not-so-pleasant events that lead to her melt-down and uses comedic relief both of the witty and physical kind. The highlight of the play involved a conversation between herself and the one and only Céline Dion. Running from one spotlight to another, Anne Marie steals the one-woman show with her hilarious impersonation of the famous singer who has it all.
Suddenly Mommy! is replete with funny and witty moments that are sure to make you laugh, if not nod your head in agreement. Anne Marie's tale is one that is real and not as far fetched as one would hope. I could easily relate to a number of scenarios as did a number of parents in the audience. On the whole, I would recommend Suddenly Mommy! to any parent looking for a fun night out sans enfants. With tickets purchased in advance costing as little as $20, it is well worth the trip out to The Theatre Centre. And with the venue being small and intimate, every seat is a good seat. You almost feel like you're a part of the show. So grab your fellow moms and their husbands and head out for a comedy-filled night that's perfect for moms and dads alike.
Disclosure: I received a pair of complimentary tickets to see Suddenly Mommy! in order to facilitate this review. Any opinions expressed in this review are my own.

So you're probably all familiar with the rainbow coloured candy known as Skittles. But do you know where they come from? Surprisingly enough, it all started with a belly button. Douglas Birch is an 18-year-old phenomenon who enjoys mowing the lawn, bird watching and photosynthesis. He also has a tree growing out of him that bears tiny multi-coloured fruit called Skittles. Here is a recent commercial in which Douglas starred:
Now that Tree Boy, I mean, Douglas, is growing up, he has developed a yearning to attend college to study and hang out with his friends while enjoying the Skittles that fall from his branches. But he needs your help. From April 25 until June 30, 2011, Skittles is encouraging Canadians across the country to visit www.freetreeboy.ca to vote for what college program they want Tree Boy to attend when he is free.
Also, when you purchase specially marked packs of Skittles in stores, you can get one of six Freedom Bands to show your support for Tree Boy. It had been a while since I've had Skittles but Tree Boy was so kind to send some my way since they are having a great harvest this year. My favourite flavour would have to be Berry Explosion. But since I have a terrible sweet tooth, I knew I couldn't keep them all to myself. Our school participated in its fourth annual Terry Fox Run (yes, in May!) and raised over $3300. I am super thrilled that we passed the total for last year which was just over $2900. As a token of appreciation and to reward their efforts, one class will be given the loot of Skittles and Freedom Bands that Tree Boy was so kind to share with me. I can't wait to see the look on their faces! I would imagine they will be just as thrilled as Tree Boy once he is set free.
Disclosure: I was sent a variety pack of Skittles product from Tree Boy as a thank-you for supporting his campaign. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own.

I received a basket of Cesar Bistro meals for our dog to test out thanks to Toronto Teacher Mom. Yes, the whole family gets involved with my reviews!
The Cesar Bistro meals arrived in a nice whicker basket with a leash and a bunch of doggy doo-doo bags the kids could use when they walked Brady next.
I was happy that the Bistro containers were easy to open and not messy at all. The last thing I wanted to do was get my hands covered in dog food. At least, not the dog food I was used to feeding my dogs as a kid!
The ingredients impressed me – it is real food. I had to chuckle when the thought crossed my mind… someone {human} could really eat this! Grilled chicken primavera, steak tips and garden greens… it smelled and looked like real food in gravy!Brady (Beagle/Pug Cross) |
A friend of mine happened to be over and since she has one of those “armpit” dogs I call them. You know… the ones that fit under your arm and are as light as a feather. She gladly took the “one gulp to Brady” treats home to feed her dog, Bam-Bam.

Thanks to Diana for asking me to help her with this review and to Cesar Bistro for sending it my way.

This week, Anne Marie Scheffler will be performing her 7th one person show, Suddenly Mommy! Canadian Comedy Award nominee, Second City Alumnae and star of her own comedy special on CTV and The Comedy Network, Scheffler first performed the show on Mother’s Day to a nearly sold-out crowd. Perfectly Norma Productions has now secured a week run of Suddenly Mommy! at The Theatre Centre in Toronto from May 16-22, 2011.
Written and performed by Anne Marie Scheffler and directed by Debbie Tidy, the stage production focuses on a woman who becomes a mom, a step-mom and wife because she wasn't getting any younger and didn't want to "miss out." What she discovers is that motherhood isn't so glamorous.
Anne Marie Scheffler didn't think motherhood would be this hard. She thought she could be the sexy showbiz mom, with a baby in one arm and a movie script in the other. Her jarring realization otherwise makes for a humorous and entertaining show. Scheffler is a charismatic, sparkling performer. - CBC Review
I have been invited to attend the show and look forward to watching the Toronto-based actress and playwright live on stage tomorrow night. I'll be bringing my dear blogging friend Mom2Michael for a good laugh. And you can join us, too. Tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance from www.suddenlymommy.com and $25 at the door.
Disclosure: I have been offered a pair of complimentary tickets to attend the show in order to provide a review.

Yesterday turned out to be another cold and rainy day. Yet, instead of staying cooped up indoors, my kids and I ventured a trip downtown to participate in a "Sundae Funday" media event hosted by Frigidaire and Save the Children Canada which took place at the Drake Hotel. It was an opportunity for guests and their children to make their own ice cream sundaes and learn more about Frigidaire's partnership with the charity.
We arrived right on time to enjoy some colouring activities as well as some magical entertainment before heading over to the sundae table and creating a super tasty treat. My son chose vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and chocolate chips. He was quite content. My daughter loaded hers with chocolate sauce, sprinkles and chocolate brownies. Of course, I had to try one. You know, to make sure it met sundae standards. I had a vanilla ice cream sundae topped with chocolate chips, sprinkles and bits of chocolate chip cookies. In case you were wondering, it surpassed quality testing. In fact, it was incredibly delicious. When they brought out a second batch of ice cream, @cbadov made a point of sampling it but contemplated having seconds to be sure it was just as tasty.
Later on, there was a special presentation that included a video clip of artist ambassador for Save the Children Canada, and mother of two, Jennifer Garner. Her work with Frigidaire and Save the Children is based on her belief that all children deserve an equal start in life. And I couldn't agree with her more. According to Save the Children,
1 in 4 First Nations children lives in poverty compared to 1 in 9 other Canadian children.
The First Nations' infant mortality rate is 1.5 times higher than the national rate.
First Nations infants are four times more likely to die of injury than other Canadian infants.
These facts alone are enough to raise concern. How can these children be given an equal start in life when they are born amidst these statistics? Why must they be subject to poverty, psychological challenges and violence? Granted that Colonialism, residential schools, inequitable distribution of resources and geographic isolation are all factors that play into the social and economic challenges for First Nations communities. But is right that their daily struggles lessen their children's chances at having a bright future? What's even more sad is that these are children who live right here in Canada. So what can we do?
"We believe every child in this world, no matter what race, gender or religion, deserves an equal chance at success in life. Frigidaire provides financial support for the important initiatives that help heal Aboriginal families and communities in Canada."
- Stephanie Clarke, Corporate Marketing Manager for Frigidaire
Launched on May 15, www.sundaefunday.ca is a website where families can learn about the initiatives being carried out by Save the Children as well as teach their kids about the importance of giving back. For each virtual sundae created in the Make Your Sundae game, Frigidaire will give $1 to Save the Children Canada up to a maximum of $25,000. This is just a fraction of their total commitment of $100,000 to be given to the charity this year. Families are also encouraged to host their own offline sundae parties throughout the summer by inviting guests to make a $5 donation for every real sundae built. Funds raised can be donated directly to the charity post-party either online or by email. The site also has some handy party planning tips and colouring pages as well.
Save the Children Canada has also partnered with Dr. Jean-Victor Wittenberg, the Head of Infant Psychiatry at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, to help Aboriginal parents improve their responsiveness and sensitivity to the needs of their children. This will help improve the bonding experience between parent and child Much to my delight, I learned that, since 2008, Scholastic Canada has supported First Nations communities by donating 30,000 books to Save the Children Canada which has distributed them to school libraries.
Overall, the Sundae Funday was a fun and memorable event and a worthwhile opportunity to learn about an important cause. It was really nice to connect with old friends and make new acquaintances. It was also so nice to see a room full of happy children. I would like to thank Save the Children Canada and Frigidaire for extending the invitation and for making the commitment to help children in need.
