Summer is in full swing and, after kicking it off with an amazing teacher conference last week, I'm looking forward to some overdue restoration and relaxation. At the top of my list - yoga! Admittedly, my yoga routine has been somewhat lacking. I'm more of a stop-drop-and-yoga kind of gal, sneaking in asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath work) throughout my day. Every January, many of us commit to New Year's resolutions in the hopes of making significant lifestyle changes. Whether that means being more active, travelling more, procrastinating less, or developing healthier eating habits, making resolutions is often the easy part. Sticking to our goals beyond those first few weeks of the year is what tends to challenge us most. Even though joining a gym has popped up on my list of resolutions over the past several years, I am a woman of convenience and choose the comfort of my own home for the majority of my workouts. But more often than not, the motivation to pull out my yoga mat tends to sway, especially during the gloomy winter months when I would prefer to hibernate in the warmth of my cozy bed. One of the first things that caught my eye was a bright pink Athletic Works Running Tank. I particularly like the drawstring hem that can be tightened, which proves useful whenever I do inversions. It is also designed with Athletic Works DRI-MORE technology which helps to wick away moisture.

I chose to pair this top with a basic black Athletic Works Cotton Blend Legging that has non-chafing, flatlock seams and is made of 90% cotton. It, too, offers DRI-MORE tech and is tagless, just like the tank top. It even has a convenient media pocket in the waistband for your cell phone. Plus, they are incredibly comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, I bought similar leggings in their capri style. And no, they're not black. They're grey.

First up is Gaiam's Luxe Yoga Leggings. Featuring a boho inspired print with a Balinese twist seen here in Parrot Blue Infinity, these leggings are completely opaque and are made with a quick drying yoga compression fabric. They have a power mesh panelled waistband to help slim and support, with a higher rise at the back to keep you covered, and a hidden waistband pocket to store small essentials.

Next, we have the Quinn Bra Top in matching Parrot Blue Infinity that is designed for low to medium impact and has a wide open back for an unrestricted range of motion. The feature that I love most about this top is the adjustable mesh back panel that is not only breathable but adds the perfect touch of fashion to function. As with the Luxe Yoga Leggings, this top has anti-chafe seams and 4-way stretch for added comfort. The stay-put support band feels slightly tighter than most of my sport bras but the more I wear it, the less I notice.

Throw in some new yoga gear and you can officially colour me inspired. At the top of my list of must-have yoga accessories is a fresh new mat. For review, I opted to try out the 5mm Reflection Reversible Print Premium Yoga Mat because I was instantly drawn to the lotus flower print. It also pairs quite nicely with my Gaiam Thirsty Yoga Mat Towel. The Premium Reversible Mat features a "sticky" non-slip surface and is made without the six most harmful phthalates. It is listed at $39.99 but if you prefer the 3mm Classic, it costs only $21.99.

Next up is the super stylish Metro Gym Bag. Active for Life Role Model Spotlight

Active For Life

As a teacher and a mother of two young children, I value the importance of regular physical activity and have witnessed first hand how physical literacy plays a crucial role in the development of a child’s skill set and self-confidence. With that said, I couldn’t be more thrilled to align myself with a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of physical literacy - Active for Life.

Active for Life is the place where parents go to learn about activities for kids. Physical education leads to physical literacy, which is critical for child development. Physical literacy also gives active kids the best chance to someday compete in high-performance sport. Kids activities are organized here by age and gender, so parents can find fun and engaging ways of making sure their children get the recommended daily amount of physical activity. Activities for toddlers are aimed at the development of fundamental movement skills, while activities for children build on the fundamentals to establish more complex sport skills that can be used to play any number of sports and activities. Exercises for kids enhance their physical development. In the early stages of child growth, early childhood development is dependent on appropriate exercises for children. Because kids play is good for kids health.

I am a firm believer that one of the best ways we can educate our children about physical literacy is to provide them with a model. With that said, I am by no means an athlete nor am I in the best physical shape but I do enjoy a variety of physical activities such as bike riding, going for a walk and even running. In fact, the kids and I recently participated in a 5k run hosted by their school in support of Free the Children, and in a few weeks, I will be participating in my third Warrior Dash. I've even attempted wall climbing as well as treetop trekking and the high ropes at Blue Mountain. Last fall, I signed up for boot camp with fellow colleagues and it has proven to be quite an experience. Since starting boot camp, I have managed to increase the number of regular push-ups I can do from two to 20! We sometimes share the gym with the after school daycare and I often catch some of my students peaking through the divider but I have to tell myself it's okay for them to see me all fatigued with disheveled hair. Because really, they need to see that physical activity is important at every age. Finally, one of my all-time favourite ways to get active is through yoga. While I don't practice as regularly as I used to, I find the sum of my experiences has made me more aware of my posture and breathing. And yeah, I have pretty much mastered the Sirsasana II, also known as the tripod headstand.

Rest Nest Float Club in Yorkville, Toronto

Is it just me or is there a new trend popping up in the health and wellness industry? I'm sure many of you are aware of the benefits of bathing in saltwater pools but now there's a new saltwater experience that is taking rest and relaxation to a whole new level. They call it floating. No, it has nothing to do with root beer floats or the kind you find at Carabana. Float therapy is a zero gravity escape into a float pod where sensory inputs are eliminated and your body feels completely weightless. When I first read about floating, the idea of being enclosed in complete darkness in a pod wasn't so appealing. Yet, being able to experience complete relaxation in a weightless environment intrigued me. Then, as if they had read my mind, I received a gift card from Rest Nest Float Club located in Yorkville here in Toronto. Now I had no excuse. I had to try it!

Rest Nest Float Club, located at 21 Yorkville Avenue, opened earlier this year in a newly renovated space located just across from Toronto Fire Station 312 and the Yorkville Library. The multi-level unit features a relaxing waiting room on the main floor and a beautiful spiral staircase leading up to a mini bar area.

To the right is a gorgeous open space basked in natural light thanks to the large windows that face Yorkville Avenue. The beautiful cork flooring was specifically selected as it provides warmth and quiet, and is highly suitable for yoga classes and their monthly Urban Retreats. Beyond the doorway, you will find three float rooms and a bathroom.

Each room has a float pod and a shower. I booked Room 3, which happens to be their smallest room and I found it was a bit cramped for my taste. Before you begin your float, which is an hour in length, it is recommended you use the loo then use the shower. They provide soft wax ear plugs which they suggest using prior to your shower to create a water-proof seal around the outermost part of your ears. Once you're all set, you turn off the lights in the room and enter into the pod, which remains lit until you manually turn off the light. The pod itself is quite large and much more spacious than I had previously imagined. It is filled with ten inches of warm water and 850 pounds of dissolved magnesium salts. After you have entered the pod, you lower the hatch, which is suspended by hydraulics and does not lock, making it easy to open. If it's your first float, you could leave the light on as it adds a beautiful glow in Chakra colours. But I highly recommended turning it off by using the blue button on the right. You can always turn it back on whenever you feel the need. In the slight chance you get saltwater in your eyes, there is a spritz bottle of fresh water and a towelette inside the pod. Music plays to signal the end of your float and you have a few minutes before the water begins to filter.

The Floating Experience

Lying weightless in your own private pod surrounded by complete silence and utter darkness is unlike anything I have ever felt before. I remained in Savasana or corpse pose for the entire hour and focused on breathing and relaxing my neck. I also had to adjust to the feeling of the ear plugs, which I've never worn before. Initially, lying in the pod was somewhat disorienting and it felt as though I was slowing spinning in a clockwise direction. I panicked slightly because I thought I wouldn't be able to locate the light button in the dark if I wasn't in my initial position but then I reached out to touch either side of the pod and was reassured. Logically so since the pod is oblong in shape. At one point, it felt like I was floating in space and kind of like I was disconnected from my limbs, as weird as that may sound. I imagine this is what it would feel like being suspended in jello. Once the music began to play, I started to wiggle my toes and fingers, and awaken my body. I turned the light back on, opened the pod and rinsed off in the shower, feeling completely relaxed.

Barre3 Toronto, The First Canadian Flagship Studio

Having first delved into the world of yoga nearly 15 years ago, I have developed a fondness for and an appreciation of the discipline. I am by no means a true yogi but feel it plays an important role in my daily life, even if it only amounts to a greater awareness of my posture or my breathing. I joke that you can find me standing on my head because quite often a sirshasana (headstand) is as much yoga as I can fit into my daily schedule. I don't always make time for a full yoga class but I do enjoy squeezing in asanas (postures) whenever I can whether at work or at home. In the past, I have tried Pilates but didn't find it as relaxing as yoga. Quite frankly, I found it too strenuous for my liking. More recently, I have been intrigued by the idea of ballet barre fitness but it wasn't until I was invited to try out barre3 in Toronto that I had the unique experience that combines all three disciplines into one.

This first Canadian barre3 location is situated at 325 King St. West, Suite 201, and has been open for nearly a month. It is a ballet barre workout that is influenced by both yoga and Pilates and was created by fitness and wellness expert, Sadie Lincoln. With a whole-health approach to wellness, barre3 offers smart, balanced and effective ballet barre workouts as well as nutritional guidance based on sensible, whole foods. Barre3 has been around since 2008 but Toronto owner Aimee Ostrander only discovered it a couple of years ago and loved it so much, she decided to open her very own studio.

Barre3 signature workouts balance strength training through isometric holds and small, one-inch movements with seamless recovery stretches. Unlike other barre-inspired workouts, barre3 incorporates larger, functional movements with low-impact cardio to jumpstart the metabolism and re-oxygenate the body. Also unique to the brand, an array of modifications, both up and down in intensity, is offered for every posture allowing all fitness levels to maximize the workout.

The special preview barre3 class was fun but intense at times, although I really enjoyed the ways in which the barre3 core ball was implemented into the workout. It was amazing to learn how squeezing the ball between your knees during a squat, for example, can really take that pose to the next level! I also loved using the ballet barre and the variations in movement that included stretching upwards while standing on your toes. The whole workout made me more aware of muscles that I have neglected for quite some time. Like, forever. Abs included. I sure felt the heat when holding certain postures and my legs would start to quiver. I managed to get through the first half of the class but once we got onto the mat for some Pilates style exercises, that's when I gave up. I needed short breaks in between and was happy to finish on two feet. The music was upbeat and our Master Trainer Catie Fahrner was excellent.

The studio itself is pristine and cheerful. White walls, mirrors and full-length windows make it feel more spacious and inviting. Amenities include a locker room at the back with a filtered water fountain, bathrooms and a shower. You can also purchase fitness wear and workout gear in the reception area.
