HP Canada Brain Training Challenge #1

Friday, August 30, 2013

With September right around the corner, many of us are scrambling to squeeze in just a bit more summer fun before heading back to school. In our home, we are also trying to get the kids back on schedule and help prepare them for a successful academic year. This is why we agreed to take part in the HP Canada Brain Training Challenge by completing a series of Creative IQ™ activities that are fun and engaging. To help us complete these tasks, our family was provided with a brand-new ENVY Rove20 Mobile All-in-One desktop, an ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One printer, an HP Printing Supplies Kit and a copy of Creative IQ™ full of a variety of educational challenges.

For our first challenge, my daughter and I opted to hone in on our drawing and designing skills to give my daughter's bedroom a makeover. We began by drawing her bedroom with a pencil and tracing it in black marker, customizing the layout, wall art, bedding, etc.

Then we photocopied the bedroom design a couple of times with the HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One so that my daughter could experiment with different colours to see which combination looks best.

While she busily coloured to her heart's content, I used the HP ENVY yet again to scan a copy of the drawing using the photo option so I could email a copy to myself in jpeg format directly from the printer. Then I logged onto the HP Rove20, downloaded the email attachment and opened the Fresh Paint app.

I started a fresh project and imported the scanned image of the bedroom drawing by accessing the file in my pictures folder.

And within minutes, I was able to join in the creative fun by using Fresh Paint to colour a digital copy of my daughter's drawing.

Once we were done, I had my daughter point out primary colours then secondary colours and finally asked her to pick her favourite. This was such an interesting task because it was a practical application of design skills and it gave my daughter a sense of pride to be able to design her room however she liked. Plus, it was a great way to spend some family time together. Does anyone know where I could find purple and green striped decorative pillows, by the way?

Hope you'll head on over to read about our HP Brain Training Challenge #2.

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking on a couple of additional tasks in the HP Canada Brain Training Challenge and I invite you to follow along. In the meantime, check out this incredible HP Back-to-School bundle I am giving away to one very lucky reader, courtesy of HP Canada and Creative IQ!

  3. Love that you got your daughter involved in designing her own bedroom. I am thinking about how you could apply math concepts to that too. I do projects similar to what you asked your daughter to create at my school. It's amazing what children can do when they are given the tools!
