TTM - HGG

Moms, it's time to woman your battle stations. Dads will want to suit up, too. The holiday season is stealthily approaching which means you'll need to dive into shopping mode. I have just returned from a recon mission, having narrowly avoided incoming missiles and air strikes. Today, I present my first report in the Toronto Teacher Mom 2011 Holiday Gift Guide: Battleship Live from Hasbro.

Battleship Live from Hasbro

Anyone who loves Battleship will love this new gaming experience which will challenge players and keep them on their toes. Your ultimate mission is to protect your fleet and prevent your opponent from sinking your ships. Battleship Live comes with an hourglass-shaped Live tower that, using the voice of a naval commander, directs game play and keeps track of each move. It also tells you how to setup your game board, so you don't have to look it up in an instruction pamphlet.

Battleship Live comes with a game board, the Live tower, two dividers, and a track for the spy plane. Setup up is pretty straightforward. For each opponent, you have five ships, a cannon and a command peg. After placing your ships on the first row of the grid, the first opponent makes a move. You can advance a ship forward or to the right or left. Or you can fire at your opponent or send out a spy plane. Also, you can take advantage of your fleet and send out an air strike, tomahawk missile, cruise missile, sweep for mines or send your submarine on a dive.

Once you've decided on a course of action, you use your command peg to indicate to the Live tower what you plan to do. The tower will instruct you on your next step and that you confirm your move. I really like this feature because it's a neat futuristic way to play. You just cover each of the command pads on each corner with your hand. I don't know why but it reminds of Star Trek. Engage!

The row of letters is used for your cannon to indicate where you want to launch your missiles. The third row on the grid contains mines so beware. Also, the tower likes to throw in new variables to change game play such as an unexpected typhoon or a weapons shortage. The tower also keeps track of how many hits have been made and will tell you when your ship has been sunk. If you accidentally knock a piece out if its spot, the tower will stop the game play and tell you where it needs to go in case you forget where it was.

Battleship Live from Hasbro

Battleship Live is recommended for kids age 8+, but I played this game with my daughter who is 6. She quickly figured out how to make her moves but doesn't quite understand the strategy yet. Needless to say, I won. Don't tell her, though.

Battleship Live will be available this Fall 2011. The approximate retail price is $49.99. The price is a bit steep but considering the interactive technology, it's comparable to the price you might pay for a video game. But instead of relying on visuals, you need to rely more on your listening skills. Four AA batteries are required, which are not included. You can watch the Battleship Live video on Hasbro.ca.

If you'd like a chance to win a Battleship Live game from Hasbro, I am giving away TWO right here on Toronto Teacher Mom! Fill out the Rafflecopter form below to be eligible.
