Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

If I had my druthers, I would much rather be a student in this day in age. Growing up in the 80's was still fun but when we compare the types of technological and scientific advancements that have been made in the past three decades, it is truly amazing to see how far we have come. More and more, we are seeing the benefits and real-world application of technology in the classroom and now we are taking Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outside of the classroom and into the community as well. To inspire Canadian students to get closer to the real-world possibilities of STEM, Samsung Electronics Canada recently launched the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.

What is the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge?

As part of the contest, students in Grades 6 to 12 are tasked with identifying an issue or challenge that currently exists in their town, city or neighbourhood. Once they have narrowed down an issue that they are passionate about, they must find a way to use STEM to help solve it.

Why Participate in the Challenge?

Since the economies of tomorrow will be forged by students who are proficient in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects, Samsung aims to raise student interest in STEM subjects nationwide through innovative programs. Thanks to Solve for Tomorrow Challenge partners and Canadian YouTube stars Mitch Moffit and Greg Brown of AsapSCIENCE, they will help build a better tomorrow. How? Finalist schools in the challenge will receive their share of $500,000 in Samsung classroom technology grants! But wait, it gets better. Mitch and Greg will be sharing their passion for science and education by visiting two grand prize winning schools and their communities to learn about their winning student projects and feature them in an AsapTHOUGHT video. They will also host a special and unique STEM lab experience at the winning schools.

What Are the Prizes?

  • 55 Semi-Finalists will receive CDN $1,499.99 in Samsung technology and advance to the Finalist phase.
  • 11 Finalists will receive CDN $20,000 in Samsung technology for their school and compete for a chance at becoming a National winner.
  • 2 Winners will receive CDN $50,000 in Samsung technology for their school and an exciting celebration event at the Winner’s school, including a visit by ASAPScience Inc., sponsored by the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow program.

How to Participate

Schools that are interested in participating are asked to complete the Solve for Tomorrow Challenge application form. Resources are provided on the application page that include a A Canada-wide Study of School Leaders, Teachers, Students and Parents, as well as an Education Toolkit to help with the development and implementation of a STEM-based project.
