Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Now Available on Blu-ray and Digital

It's here! Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is now available on Blu-ray™ and Digital. The dazzling adventure features a star-studded cast, including Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy and Misty Copeland, along with Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. Inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale and the beloved ballet “The Nutcracker”, follows the adventures of 14-year-old Clara (Mackenzie Foy) as she travels along a golden thread to a magical, mysterious world where she encounters sweets, snowflakes, soldiers, scurrying mice and more.

One of my favourite scenes in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” takes place at the very onset of the film where we are taken inside the attic of Clara's home and are instantly captivated by a complex Rube Goldberg-esque mousetrap as Clara narrates laws of physics. The fact that the female lead portrays a female in STEM garners the film two thumbs up!

The story continues at Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual party, where Clara finds a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a music box that holds a priceless gift. She soons enters a mysterious parallel world and encounters a Nutcracker soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), along with a gang of mice and three Realm regents, including the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley). Clara's journey continues as she ventures into the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve the key and return harmony to the unstable world.

Slava's Snowshow is Coming to Toronto!

Celebrating 25 years of world tours, Slava's Snowshow is returning to Toronto and I couldn't be more excited! It has been 20 years since the tour last brought them to our city, which was long before I got married and had two kids. In short, it was a lifetime ago! This Olivier Award-winning show will be taking place from December 7-16, 2018at the Bluma Appel Theatre at St. Lawrence Centre. It's a must-see event that promises to be full of theatrical magic, colourful clowns and dazzling effects.

When was the last time you counted your blessings? For me, it was this past weekend. I was so very fortunate to be asked to present a keynote speech at our school board's ed camp featuring G Suite. It was nerve-wracking to say the least. Not that it had anything to do with speaking in front of a large group of educators. Must-Read Books for Innovative Educators

It's the last day of March Break and I've been curling up with some good books. They're not the mystery or suspense novels that I typically enjoy but they are very much relevant in the world of education. These books have been piling up for a while so I decided to catch up on the ones I had yet to finish reading. They were written by innovative and inspiring educators throughout the past few years, and I have even had the good fortune of meeting some of the authors. Today I share a few of my favourite reads, all of which are available on Amazon.ca. And I've even thrown in a special giveaway, too, so you can check them out for yourself. Without further ado, allow me to present:

The HyperDoc Handbook: Digital Lesson Design Using Google Apps by Lisa Highfill, Kelly Hilton, Sarah Landis

After I had first heard about HyperDocs on Twitter, I was quite intrigued and signed up for their first HyperDocs Bootcamp online course. Now, it seems so many teachers have implemented HyperDocs into their teaching practice. They're a great tool for fostering creativity, collaboration and communication skills.

I had been following Brian Aspinall for quite some time. Not the creepy kind, but the social media variety. And then I was so fortunate to meet him and listen to one of his talks at a TCDSB 21C Innovators session just over a year ago. (Fan-girl moment!) While his musings on Mitch Resnick's and Seymour Papert's respective theories were quite interesting, he had me at "poop missile."

Sketchnotes for Educators by Sylvia Duckworth

Sylvia Duckworth is a Canadian teacher whose sketchnotes have taken social media by storm. Her drawings provide clarity and provoke dialogue on many topics related to education. This book contains 100 of her most popular sketchnotes with links to the original downloads that can be used in class or shared with colleagues. Interspersed throughout the book are Sylvia's reflections on each drawing and what motivated her to create them, in addition to commentary from other educators who inspired the sketchnotes.

I have been a big fan of Sylvia Duckworth for many years and I have her to blame for my ~~obsession with~~ passion for all things edtech. Most notably, I've been a big fan of her sketchnotes so I just had to have this book. It has a lot of thoughtful reflections alongside her sketchnotes and the book would make for a great teacher gift.

Knights. Castle. Action!

This March break, plan a visit to Medieval Times and enjoy two hours of medieval jousting between six competing knights, culminating in an epic battle with real weapons. Bring the whole family and immerse yourselves in an ancient realm, savour a royal feast and witness equine beauty and grace. After having visited Medieval Times thrice over the past few years, I can tell you it is an unforgettable show that makes you feel like you've been transported back in time. But don't just take my word for it. Earlier this month, I sent a colleague and her family to enjoy a King's Royalty experience, courtesy of Medieval Times Toronto. Here is what she had to say:

Hear ye, hear ye! I definitely was not prepared for the completely immersive and spellbinding experience of Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in Toronto. From the moment we walked into the expansive and wondrous hall, filled to the brim with jostling and friendly medieval characters, we were transported. It was the first time my son and I had visited Medieval Times and we were truly impressed. The authentic rustic décor, lively music, and general merriment that surrounded us set the stage for a true medieval experience.

From the entrance and main foyer we entered into the large battle arena which was already buzzing with excitement. We were treated to a hearty and filling meal of chicken, potatoes, and warm garlic bread. The servers remained all in true medieval character as we devoured our “baby dragons” aka half roasted chickens in delight. Once the lights went down and the horses came galloping out to cheers from the crowd, we were on the edge of our seats. The lyrical storytelling, knights in armour, and realistic jousting and sword battles were the great highlight throughout. It was a truly unique experience that my son and I will never forget. Three cheers!

Treat Yourself Naturally with Thursday Plantation Therapeutic Essential Oils

Thursday Plantation Therapeutic Essential Oils and Bamboo Diffuser

You know what I love? I love being able to breathe. Many people might take that for granted but me, a teacher who often gets sick, I treasure those moments between colds when I can inhale through both nostrils and truly savour the food that I eat. This is why, whenever I'm fighting a cough or cold, I will resort to some good ol' aromatherapy to help relieve some of the symptoms. My go-to essential oil is eucalyptus, which you will always find in my bathroom cupboard. I tend to add a few drops onto the floor of my shower and reap the decongestant benefits. I also envision its antiviral and antimicrobial properties attacking any potential infection that so often plagues me throughout the school year. But did you know that eucalyptus isn't the only oil that helps relieve coughs and colds? Thanks to Thursday Plantation, I learned that peppermint oil can help, too.

Peppermint oil has many other benefits as well. It is used in aromatherapy to help relieve joint or muscle pain associated with sprain, strain or rheumatoid arthritis, and it can also help relieve digestive discomfort. I recently received a Therapeutic Oils Quad Gift Pack from Thursday Plantation and, after reading more about peppermint oil, I started using it to help relieve headaches naturally. To take advantage of this particular benefit, I blended peppermint oil with olive oil, and then rubbed a few drops of the blend onto the temples. There are other carrier oils you can choose such as coconut oil, and I've also read that eucalyptus oil and lavender oil can be used in a similar way to help relieve headaches.

This has proven extremely helpful since my daughter has been experiencing some anxiety and often finds it difficult to fall asleep at night. When this happens, we add some drops of lavender oil and turn on the diffuser so she can enjoy the calming effects. Used as a multipurpose antiseptic, tea tree oil can be used for minor cuts, abrasions, insect bites, stings and even on pimples. It is also a natural way to clean surfaces and remove odours or bacteria. Simply add a few drops of tea tree oil to warm water with your usual detergent to take advantage of its disinfectant properties the next time you tackle household chores.

Afterwards, we were invited to enjoy a complimentary tea in the luxurious tea room where gentle music played.

And before our experience ended, I was able to enjoy some quietude in the relaxing steam colour therapy sauna in the ladies' change room. (There is also one in the men's change room as well.) This is actually recommended before the treatment but I completely forgot and didn't want to pass up on the chance to check it out. It's not like any sauna I've been in. The ceiling is dotted with tiny lights that slowly change colour. So pretty!
