Some Breaks Are Never Fun

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Even though I am already counting down to summer vacation, there is one break I could live without. The kind that involve x-rays and emergency rooms. Last Friday, my son fell while playing at a neighbour's and broke his collarbone. Luckily, the pain pretty much subsided after that first night. He is more heartbroken that he can't participate in sports and that he will have to wear a sling all day long for the next six weeks. I have a follow-up appointment at the fracture clinic later this week for a checkup.

Have any of you had the misfortune of breaking your collarbone? Or do you have children who have broken it? I am still confused as to what his limitations are. The paediatrician, who was impossible to get a hold of, simply recommended no contact sports for the next six to eight weeks. Does that mean I should let him play outside during recess? I know he will be careful but what about the hundreds of kids playing basketball or soccer throughout the playground? My fear is that it will take just one person running into him, causing him to fall, for him to injure his collarbone before it even has a chance to fully heal. What do you think? I would really appreciate your suggestions.

  1. The poor little guy. It's so cute that he's smiling in this photo with that big boo boo. What a trooper. I've been lucky, so far, that neither of my boys have broken anything yet.

  8. Oh dear! Hope it recovers fully soon. No experience but I reckon no sports or play outdoors during the whole period. Don't want to add extra strain to it and like you mentioned, other kids might not be as careful!

  10. Ugg! That doesn't sound fun at all! I hated breaking mine when I was 4! I'm glad he's in a sling. Hopefully he heals as quick as they say he's supposed to.

My youngest had to go to the emergency room on his break to, but not for a broken bone. He has Croup. We thought he had an asthma attack, but it was a Croup attack.

  12. I was really lucky with both of mine. So breaks during their childhoods. My daughter had some stiches in her head. My son had have his whole plumbing rearranged after we found a genetic defect when he was 12. Nothing big.

I hope he heals quickly but he should stay away from playing outside. It is easier to break the second time.

  13. Poor little guy!

Good news, collarbone breaks aren't real biggies. My son broke his skateboarding. While I was taking his picture.....

He kept it in a sling for a week or two. Not 6 weeks. He went back to skating probably before he should have, but nothing more happened. The pain was the only limiting factor and it wasn't much. They heal fairly well on their own.

Your son should be able to play on the playground some. If there are a lot of rough students, then maybe not. That's a judgement call.

Oh, my son was 13 at the time so he could make the decision to start skating again. One of my girls broke hers too. Falling off the bed. At 10 years old....

    They do survive! :)

  15. Poor guy! Such a sweet smile. My grandmother in the States recently broke hers, but she broke 4 ribs too (from an awful fall). She's in recovery (first hospital and then therapy stay). Sorry I don't have any words of wisdom, but I'm sure Google does. ;)

  26. Ouch. Here in New Zealand, they splint the arm like your son. I know that in some countries they operate to pin the bone back in place. We haven't broken a collar bone, but both my girls were competitive snow sports athletes, so they have lots of friends who have. The kids that don't rest it often end up with a bone that heels crooked, or overlapped, although it doesn't seem to give them any trouble just looks different.
