In three weeks, I will finally be on summer vacation. I know, aren't I lucky? That's two whole months off to spend with the family enjoying the summer weather and heading out in the Jeep on day-trips. We hope to head out on a camping trip as well. I love camping! Packing up all the gear and making sure we haven't left anything behind? Not so much.

Planning a family getaway can be a little stressful, especially if you’ll be spending lots of time in the car for day-trips or heading overseas for a family vacation. You need to be prepared for the unpredictable and remember to bring everything that you need. To ensure your vacation starts off on the right foot, here is a list of top summer travel tips and tricks from my friends over at P&G along with some of my own:

My favourite travel tip is to bring lots of snacks!!
ReplyDeleteYes, definitely! You can never have enough snacks. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a fortune at convenience stores or airports.
DeleteI freeze half of the juice boxes to keep others cold and also freeze grapes they are an extra yummy treat!
DeleteMy tip is to have your route planned out prior to leaving. Sometimes you can't depend on your GPS!
ReplyDeleteGood tip! I had that happen recently and I ended getting pulled over for an illegal left turn because I was following my GPS and a half a dozen cars ahead of me that did the same thing! LOL

ReplyDeleteMy favourite travel tip is to make a photocopy of all your important documents (ids, passports, etc) to take with you incase you lose any of it. It makes it a lot easier to request or reissue the cards.

ReplyDeleteMy tip is to remember to pack all your chargers and make sure you collect them up from the hotel room when you're leaving. We've left plenty of chargers plugged in behind desks and chairs and didn't realize until we were home!

ReplyDeleteWhen we drove across Canada with our 4 daughters in my sister's van (without AC) in August, we kept the kids busy by singing lots and lots of songs, having snacks at their fingers and we made alot of pit stops.

ReplyDeleteBring lots of things to help keep the kids entertained (books, toys, make up games in the car -- our favourite was trying to get through all the letters of the alphabet in order by looking at other car's license plates). Also, be spontaneous, stop in little towns even if you didn't expect to. It will make the trip memorable, and perhaps you'll find some hidden treasures.
ReplyDeleteBefore you leave home find out where the local hospital and walk in clinics are located. Write down their address, phone number and hours and keep it on hand. You never know when you need to get help and sometimes searching for a location is either too time consuming or impossible.
ReplyDeleteEven if you have a GPS take a traditional map with you. It allows for more adventures and even GPS' aren't foolproof!

ReplyDeleteAlways have a back up plan when travelling and planning outdoor activities in case of bad weather. Having bored children is NEVER fun! :)

ReplyDeleteMy travel tip is to scope out your destination before hand and plan out attractions you are interested in. Pick up free guide books at the airport or tourist info huts to see if there are coupons in there.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite travel tip is to pack lots of patience! Traffic jams. Squirmy toddlers. Boredom. Detours. It all helps to just smile and be ready for lots of pitstops.

ReplyDeleteAlong with packing the right items, it's also important to dress comfortably from the get go! No one wants to travel via car or plane in an uncomfortable outfit!

My best travel tip is to start making a pack list a few weeks ahead and leave it on the fridge. Whenever you think of something you'll need add it to the list.

ReplyDeleteWe like to pack our own food and drinks, wipes, papertowels, and if we will be spending the night somewhere, we pack our own shampoo, conditioner and body soap and make sure we have a bag filled with books, magnetic car games, colouring books and crayons. and make sure you pack extra batteries and your chargers.

Be flexible, you never know exactly how you'll feel or if the weather will cooperate. You don't want to ruin a vacation by being too rigid.

ReplyDeleteLots of snacks, and since my kids are young to have them in individual small containers to maintain the novelty ;) Also the dvd player in the car for the long trips is soo helpful!!! But LOTS of rest stops to help with the wiggles is great too plus you get to have mini adventures on the way :)

Best travel tip I can offer is having a DVD player in the back seat for the kids! OMG I have no idea how my parents ever survived long summer trips without a DVD player for us! lol

ReplyDeleteMy favourite travel tip is to make lists to ensure all the essentials are packed. I keep a list on my computer and alter it depending on the kind of trip my family is taking.
ReplyDeleteWhen we would drive to Florida, door to door, we left just after lunch. The kids were so excited the time passed, stopped for dinner, movie on the laptop, stop at a comfort station changed and ready for 'bed'! This was the best part, they slept through a huge portion of the drive and by the time they woke up in the morning we were only a few hours away!
ReplyDeleteMy tip is to not forget about what you'll return to when your trip is done, so I always clean and do the laundry, take out the garbage etc before we leave so we can come home to a clean house.

Hi Diana! We took a trip to see my Dad who lived out in eastern Quebec. It was a great memory filled week with fishing, golfing, horses, beaches, family dinners, lobsters and mussels, and the list goes on. We could have used most of your list of supplies above. Thank you!

I buy crayons and pencil crayons that have lead that turns to up because I can't bring a sharpener on a plane and do not want shavings in my van
