French Resources: French Vocabulary on PoissonRouge.com

Looking for an online interactive site that helps to reinforce thematic vocabulary? Poissonrouge.com has a page dedicated to French vocabulary along with additional pages in Greek, Chinese, and English. These pages can be found by hovering over the purple castle and then by selecting the flag representing the language you wish to practise. Each page covers ten main themes:

  • les jouets (toys)
  • le corps humain (the human body)
  • la cuisine (in the kitchen)
  • les animaux (animals)
  • l'atelier (in the workshop)
  • la salle de bains (in the bathroom)
  • les chiffres (numbers and shapes)
  • les vêtements (clothing)
  • la musique (musical intruments)
  • les transports (transportation)
The site is great for preschoolers in French Immersion as well as Core French students in grades 1 and 2. They can explore each room of the castle and hover over the objects. The name of the objet will appear on the blackboard in the upper righthand corner. If you click on the object, you can hear it French. There is also a French alphabet where children can click on the letter, hear the letter name and learn a word that starts with that letter. There are also random objects that fly, crawl or swim across the page that, if you can catch them, you can hear the French word and see it appear on the blackboard.

For parents, this site is helpful because their child may bring home a list of vocabulary words that they will need to know but that the parents may not necessary know how to pronounce. Plus, its colourful design makes exploring French vocabulary fun for the kids.
