"According to a recent survey, almost all Canadians are taking some action when it comes to the environment and are doing the little things in an effort to make a difference."

Well, guess what. Brands are, too! Companies are realizing the importance of sustainability and the need for eco-friendly products. Rather, I feel there is a huge demand for these kinds of products because I, for one, don't want to leave behind a world of non-biodegradable garbage for my grandchildren to have to worry about. This is why I am excited to share with you some of the eco-friendly products that have recently caught my eye.


Take, for example, the Schick Xtreme3 Eco. It's the same Xtreme3 razor, only better for the environment. Actually, it is the first disposable razor designed for maximum sustainability. The handle is made of 100 percent recycled plastic and the packaging is 100 percent recycled paper. By using recycled plastic, 103,000 lbs of virgin material will be rescued from landfills and dumps in the first year of production. The Eco razor handle is made of retrieved items that have been recycled, such as coat hangers, buckets, and pails. I know coat hangers are problematic and cannot be recycled here in Toronto so it's great that there are companies willing to find ways to recycle them.

Seventh Generation has been on a mission to help protect the environment with naturally safe and effective household cleaning and personal care products for over two decades. But they haven't stopped there. They have now set a goal of giving away up to 240,000 diapers to 40 shelters in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. This is roughly $160,000 in diapers that will be donated to a charitable cause that oftentimes goes without corporate assistance.


As part of the Seventh Generation Diaper Donation program, I was sent four packs of Seventh Generation chlorine free diapers to donate to a local charity. I opted to donate them to the Yellow Brick House, which provide services in York Region to women and children who have experienced violence and abuse.

It is always a great feeling to be able to help those in need, especially when it comes to innocent children. And you can help, too. During the month of October, you can "Buy One, Give One." For every package of diapers you purchase anywhere in Canada, one package will be donated to a women’s shelter. That means one mother will be able to offer her child safe & effective, chlorine-free diapers. Now that's my kind of BOGO.

When I was a wee lass, I made every effort to recycle paper, plastics and glass, as well as reduce and reuse whenever possible. I thought I was being very responsible when it came to being eco-conscious. As I grew older, I realized there was so much more that I could do. It wasn't until I met my husband and we had children that my outlook towards the environment changed drastically. The biggest change centred around cleaning products, namely those that had a harsh, chemical smell. I'm pretty sure my sense of smell became more heightened post-pregnancy, but I like to think it was my body's way of saying that I needed to be extra cautious when it came to exposing my children to potentially harmful products.
