Dolittle - Now Available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital!

After several weeks of "Go, go, go!" I can honestly say I'm ready to do little. As in Dolittle. I have spent many late nights trying to perfect interactive digital activities for my students, several hours of video conferencing with colleagues and family, and plenty of afternoons helping my own kids navigate this new world of distance learning. I need a movie night! And with one of my all-time favourite actors as the lead, Dolittle was just the right flick for chilling out with the family.

While we missed out on watching Dolittle in theatres, we were delighted to have received a complimentary copy on Blu-ray + DVD + Digital. Last Friday, we pulled out our stovetop popcorn popper and enjoyed a fresh batch while curling up on the sofa. It was a welcome escape from my busy work-from-home routine and plus, Robert Downey Jr.

Nuff said.

The story follows the journey of Dolittle, an eccentric doctor played by Robert Downey Jr. who is called upon to save the queen after she has fallen gravely ill. He reluctantly leaves his lush 19th-century home in England and embarks on a perilous adventure alongside his animal companions with whom he has the ability to communicate. Joining him is an unexpected apprentice Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett) and together they form an unlikely bond. The adventurous tale is brought to life with an all-star cast that includes the voice talents of Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Selena Gomez, John Cena, Tom Holland, and more.

Overall, we enjoyed the storyline, along with the impressive CGI and visual effects. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Antonio Banderas, despite my having to do a double-take when his character was first introduced. I also appreciated the witty repartee amongst the animal characters and my son particularly enjoyed the fight scene between Chee-Chee the gorilla (Malek) and Barry, the gold-fanged tiger (Ralph Fiennes). For some reason, I was a little thrown off by Roberty Downey Jr.'s performance and I'm not quite sure if it's because of his English accent, his raspy voice or that it sounded more like a voiceover. At any rate, he was a great fit for the role simply because he does "quirky" so well.

Growing up, I always admired my dad for coming to a new country and working hard to be able to provide for his family. When he first started his own business in the construction industry, my admiration for him only grew. Enjoying Classic Comfort with #MyBrunswickBed

After the past few months, I have arrived at the conclusion that a good night's sleep is crucial to maintaining my sanity. When I think about how I used to stay up until the wee hours of the morning designing worksheets on my computer, I can't help but shake my head. Of course, that was during the BC period - Before Children. Even still, once I started blogging back in 2006 while on my first maternity leave, I sacrificed many hours of rest, fine tuning my blog design, routinely posting content and commenting on other blogs. Now, things are different. Now, I can't wait to go to bed and fall asleep on my Douglas mattress. I've had it for over a year and a half, and I love it so much. But I would often feel a little selfish every time my son would lie down next to me and wish for a new mattress of his own. So when Novosbed approached me to test out their new Brunswick spring mattress, I couldn't wait to share the news with my little guy.

When I learned that the Brunswick is actually a spring mattress, I had to re-read the description a couple of times to make sure I wasn't going crazy. Could Novosbed really manage to find a way to roll up a spring mattress to fit into a box? Surely this is some type of sorcery, I joked. But it's true! Our full size classic mattress arrived in a box that was only slightly taller than my son, making it easier to carry up the stairs to his room.

As with the Douglas, the Brunswick was vacuum sealed and rolled up in heavy duty plastic. Before setting it up, I made sure to read up on the step-by-step breakdown which I found on brunswickbed.ca:

Take the boxed mattress to your room of choice, and open the box.
Slowly tip the package onto its side and pull the box away from the rolled mattress.
Place the rolled mattress onto the bed frame or foundation.
Peel away the outer layer of plastic wrap; fully unroll the mattress.
Open and remove the inner layer of plastic.
Watch it expand, and enjoy!

Once we had unravelled the mattress, I could see that it had springs but I still found myself trying to wrap my head over how they could possibly fit a spring mattress into a box. Please tell me I'm not the only one!

We waited a bit after the mattress had fully expanded and admired the comfy looking padded top layer of the Euro-top cover. I learned that hemp fibres are woven throughout, making it more durable and resilient since hemp has three times the tensile strength as cotton. It also has antimicrobial properties as well.

If you're thinking, "Now that looks like a cushy mattress!" you wouldn't be wrong. Underneath the cover is three layers of varying foam types to help balance support and cushioning. In addition, the two upper-most layers have a cooling gel that allow air and heat to circulate. But I'm sure you're also wondering if it feels like a classic spring mattress. It does! The Brunswick has a medium-firm feel to it, even when both my son and I tried laying on it together. In fact, thanks to the individually wrapped pocketed coils, I could hardly notice he was lying next to me. Which explains why I have unintentionally fallen asleep on his mattress on more than one occasion.

It has been nearly three months and my son still gets that dreamy look on his face when he mentions how much he loves his new mattress. Overall, he and I both love the ultra comfy foam top and appreciate the cooling feature. We also love the edge-to-edge support because, unlike my old mattress, it makes it seem like there is more space to snuggle into when you can curl right up to the edge. You see, as a mom, this is crucial for those moments when I wake up to find an arm across my face and a knee in my back.

Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Now Available on Blu-ray and Digital

It's here! Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is now available on Blu-ray™ and Digital. The dazzling adventure features a star-studded cast, including Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy and Misty Copeland, along with Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman. Inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale and the beloved ballet “The Nutcracker”, follows the adventures of 14-year-old Clara (Mackenzie Foy) as she travels along a golden thread to a magical, mysterious world where she encounters sweets, snowflakes, soldiers, scurrying mice and more.

One of my favourite scenes in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” takes place at the very onset of the film where we are taken inside the attic of Clara's home and are instantly captivated by a complex Rube Goldberg-esque mousetrap as Clara narrates laws of physics. The fact that the female lead portrays a female in STEM garners the film two thumbs up!

The story continues at Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual party, where Clara finds a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a music box that holds a priceless gift. She soons enters a mysterious parallel world and encounters a Nutcracker soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), along with a gang of mice and three Realm regents, including the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley). Clara's journey continues as she ventures into the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve the key and return harmony to the unstable world.

littleBits Droid Inventor Kit: A Fun and Educational STEAM Toy

Just when you thought STEAM toys couldn't get any cooler, along comes the littleBits Droid™Inventor Kit. Last month, we received a free kit from littleBits to test out and now it's all I... er... my son and I want to play with. Using magnetic "Bits" that snap together, we were able to level-up on our inventor skills by creating our very own Droid, customizing it with stickers, controlling it with our device and programming it to complete fun missions.

After removing all the contents from the packaging and placing all the littleBits into the handy sorting tray, we downloaded the free Droid Inventor app onto our iPad and followed the instructions which helped us to put together our Droid.

With this app, we were able to learn about the control hub, driving circuit and internal structure of our Droid. The final mission of the first level in this training program showed us how to put together the droid shell using step-by-step visual instructions.

On Level 2, the app showed us where to place the stickers. You can choose from red, blue or blank stickers, which are included in the kit. Then you can add personality by changing the colour of the lights and adding sounds from 20+ authentic sounds bank or recoding a secret voice message using your device's microphone.

Other missions include an obstacle course challenge, draw mode, self navigation mode, code master and more. The Force™ Mode mission is really fun because you can guide your Droid with your hand using the included proximity sensor. But my favourites are the 6+ new block-based coding missions which give you the ability to program the Droid. We really enjoyed coding our Droid to navigate through a mini obstacle course, which involved a lot of trial and error, but was fun nonetheless! Here's a little sneak peak:

The littleBit Droid Inventor kit comes with everything kids need to create and customize their R2 Unit straight out of the box, including a 9V battery, and retails for $99.95. When was the last time you counted your blessings? For me, it was this past weekend. I was so very fortunate to be asked to present a keynote speech at our school board's ed camp featuring G Suite. Coding and Sketching with Cue the Robot

Since I first started exploring the idea of using programmable robots in the classroom, I have come across quite a large variety of robots that each offer unique features. There are robots that you can program using a mobile app and there are those that have built-in controls and require no additional device. Some robots have fancy sensors and others flashy lights. There are those that can be used in water and others that can create sketches. For the most part, I have found that there are lot of robots geared towards younger children, as well as those designed with older children in mind. And then we have robots that are ideal for the in between stage, robots such as Cue.

Cue the robot was created by Wonder Workshop, the makers of the ever popular and award-winning Dash and Dot robots. Designed with advanced robot technology, Cue robots give middle school and high school teachers the tools to introduce students to robots and practice coding concepts. While Dash and Dot is geared towards children age 6 and up, Cue is recommended for children age 11 and older, and brings with it a witty attitude full of interactive surprises. This clever robot features the following:

When my son and I first started using Cue, we turned on our robot and followed instructions for the initial diagnostic setup, which is usually a monotonous task but, thanks to Cue's witty personality, this process was hilariously fun. We were then directed to download the Cue app onto our iPad. If you do not have an Apple device, you'll be happy to know that the app is available on Android, Kindle, Chromebook, and Windows 10 as well. Once you pair the device with your robot, you will meet four avatar hero personalities, each with hundreds of built-in phrases. You can select one and give it a name.

Using the app, learning to program Cue’s motors, sensors, sounds, buttons, and LEDs is super easy. You can write code with Block, JavaScript, or their unique Wonder programming experience by exploring coding and robotics with 30+ in-app challenges and examples. The iOS, Android and Kindle apps also offer a chat box where you can exchange messages with your avatar, who will respond with snappy answers, memes and jokes. You can also use your mobile device as a remote control, navigating your Cue around tight corners or obstacles. Cue retails for $199.99.

With th Sketch Kit drawing accessory, you can also access commands which will program Cue to draw. This kit allows kids to visualize the results from their code by attaching a caddy that holds a dry-erase marker and placing the robot on a dry-erase surface, taking Cue to a whole other level of STEAM. The kit includes six dry-erase markers in blue, red, green, orange, purple and black, as well as ten double-sided project starter cards with challenges of varying degrees of difficulty. This opens up endless possibilities for cross-curricular lessons in math, art, and more! I played around with some code and figured out (by accident) how to code a 5-point star. I recorded a video and since Cue looked like he was dancing, I added a fun Latin beat:

The Sketch Kit is compatible with Dash, so it works with Wonder and Blockly mobile apps, in addition to Cue and Cue for Education apps. For teachers who would like to use Cue in the classroom with Chromebooks or Windows 10 laptops, you can create free accounts for teachers and students using Office 365 or Google SSO. This means you can automatically sync programs to the cloud and access them across multiple devices. Students can then try any tutorial, challenge, and example for each programming editor at any time.

Another option would be to purchase the Sketch Kit and Whiteboard Mat bundle for $129.99, which would save you $10. However, you could find a more affordable solution by purchasing some vinyl or similar material at a fabric store. I purchased one metre of 12 gauge clear vinyl for about $11 and one metre of white patent vinyl for about $14 that could each be used as a dry-erase surface. I would even ask for a discarded empty roll so you can roll it up for storage.

Don't forget to check out Wonder Workshop's handy educational resources. They recently released Learn to Code Curriculum for Grades K-5 that introduces students to sequencing, loops, events, conditionals, functions and variables, and Applied Robotics Curriculum for Grade 6-8, which delves even deeper. Each of these align with CSTA, ISTE, NGSS and Common Core standards.
