Join Us for the #cleanwater Twitter Chat With Jason Priestley!
Friday, February 20, 2015
This morning, while getting ready for work, I fell into the daily routine of washing my face, brushing my teeth, brushing my hair and getting dressed. Once in the kitchen, I filled a pot with water to boil eggs for breakfast and then poured fresh water from the tap into water bottles while my husband prepared the kids' lunches. The funny thing is that I had resorted to using tap water several times this morning alone and yet, not once did I stop to think about how fortunate we are to have access to clean water. The sad reality is that many of us Canadians take clean water for granted since it is so readily available. A more somber reality lies in the fact that more than one billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water.
Given that contaminated water causes diseases that are killing more children than HIV Aids and Malaria combined, P&G and Walmart Canada have teamed up to donate one day of clean drinking water for every P&G household product purchased at Walmart or Walmart.ca. This Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW) aims to save one life every hour by 2020 through the provision of two billion litres of clean water each year. Recently, 45-year-old Vancouver-born actor Jason Priestley was named Canadian ambassador of the CSDW campaign and recently visited rural batey communities in the Dominican Republic where he was able witness the impact of the P&G CSDW Program first-hand.
“More than 1,600 children die every single day from water-borne illnesses,” says Jason Priestley. “I believe that everyone should have clean water. As a dad, the thought of children dying every day from preventable diseases caused by lack of clean water is an unfathomable tragedy.”
