A Working Mom's Fashion Woes

Monday, August 13, 2012

Heavens to Betsy, it's almost back-to-school? I know there are still a few weeks remaining of summer vacation. And I've had a wonderful break so far. But there's a part of me that doesn't want to go back to work in September. It's not that I don't love my job. I do. I think it has more to do with giving up my comfy Lululemon yoga wear and trading it in for plain old boring business attire.

Okay, so maybe it's not so boring as much as limited. I don't have a lot of items in my closet that are suitable for work so what I do have ends up being recycled over and over and over again. By the time June arrives, I am utterly sick of my work clothes. Usually, before September comes rolling in, I have found a couple of new pieces that bring some excitement and new life to my wardrobe. I did buy a couple of simple tops and a skirt to take with me to BlogHer in New York but I'm not overly thrilled about them. I just can't seem to shake this icky feeling towards the inanimate objects hanging in my closet.

So what is a working mom with little fashion sense to do? I have no clue, really. I rarely go out to the mall unless I'm in Hamilton and my mother can watch the kids for me. Plus, I often buy random pieces that fit just fine and are reasonably priced but don't do much in the way of adding some much needed pizzazz. At times, I am just plain overwhelmed by the perfect mannequins dressed in the perfect outfit that clings in all the right places. Sometimes, I just want to throw my hands in the air and not care about how I look.

And sometimes, I wonder if I would feel differently if someone else did my shopping for me. Yes. That's it. I need a personal shopper. Someone who knows exactly what will fit me and will make me look smart. In both senses of the word. Or I'd settle for Robert Pattinson. Whomever I can get my hands on first.

  1. Hahaha love this post! But you DID actually look smoking hot at BlogHer, so I don't know what you're talking about! But yes, I'd love a personal shopper too :)

    1. Oh, Lena, you're too kind! The tunic dress I wore on the first night is not quite something I'd wear to work. But the outfit I'm wearing with Robert Pattinson is. I just hope I don't get bored of it too quickly.

  2. I dislike shopping with a passion, yet I love it as well. I have a hard time clothes shopping. It can be so frustrating. Especially for work (which I haven't done in a couple years but I think I may need to head back in a little while). Love this post! Too funny. And love the Robert P picture. :)

    1. Tee hee! Thanks, Mamacita! I really have to be in a mood for clothes shopping to have the patience to try on clothes. I've only been to one store recently where a couple of ladies did a great job of 'sizing' me up and pulling out pieces that looked fab on me. But way too pricey. Still, it was nice feeling like Pretty Woman.

  3. Ha!!! Lobe that first photo Diana!
I'm with ya on this, I really hate shopping for the fact that nothing I like looks good on me. Plus, the stress of taking 3 kids? Ugh, not my thing!

Side note: have seen you, especially those rocking heels - you are ok in the fashion dept, my friend!

    1. You're crushing on my bottle-cap glasses, aren't ya? LOL

Side note: yes, you have seen me. And you've pretty much seen the extent of my wardrobe within those four days!
