I'm Doing the Potty Dance!

Saturday, January 29, 2011

No, I'm not summoning the pee gods in some kind of strange version of the Rain Dance. I'm celebrating that my son, who will be three in May, asked to use the potty Wednesday morning and he did it! He went pee in the potty for the first time in months. And he was so proud of it, too! I wasn't expecting him to do anything so I was pleasantly surprised. He even started singing the Potty Dance song we learned last March. Only he kept singing the first line over, and over, and over...

It's seems like a long time ago since we first pulled out the porto-potty but we never really made a huge effort to get him out of diapers. I think back to when we tried to train our daughter and all the stress and frustration that came with it. Not pleasant. This time, I don't have such high expectations and I'm taking a more laid-back approach. We'll see how it goes.

If you'd like to read my tips on potty training, head over to my Pull-Ups Potty Dance post. I just finished watching the video of my daughter. Isn't she just plain adorable?

  1. Yeah, I think the key is consistency (as is anything with parenting isn't
it?). It sends mixed messages if we encourage them to be a "big kid" and
then we put them back in a diaper for sure. I had a hard time when we were
heading out of the house because I was paranoid about accidents in the car
or at the mall etc. I got over it though quite quickly because I really
wanted to encourage what she was doing and she did so amazingly well!

Yes, I say go with it with your son! If he is even interested in wearing
underwear and everything, he's giving you all of the signs! Be ready to
take the jump though, head first so that you aren't going back and forth, it
will make for an easier transition for him. Maybe wait until he has gone a
few more times, a bit more consistently on the potty to switch him over to
    underpants? Just a suggestion.

  2. That is so interesting! I can't get over how easy it was to 'train' your daughter. It wasn't so easy for us but mind you, we weren't consistent. I couldn't stand the idea of having her pee in every corner of the house so whenever she had an accident, I would put training pants back on. Talk about sending mixed signals. Oh well.

My son will be three in May and has only recently begun to express an interest in using the potty. He was also proud to hang out without a diaper after bath time today because he loves the idea of wearing underwear. I should definitely roll with it, eh?

PS. I am so over the diaper thing, too. As is my wallet.

  3. It's amazing how each child can be different! My daughter (who is almost 6 now) pretty much "trained" herself right before she turned 2. She was trained in less than 2 weeks and when I say trained, I mean day and night. She never had a wet bed and I think we only had 2 daytime accidents ever! CRAZY!

My son, on the other hand is 2 years 3 months and shows NO interest in the potty whatsoever. Every once in a while, starting last summer, he goes on the potty, but just once and then that is that.

With him, I am just going to follow his lead (like I did with my daughter) and cross my fingers that his interest comes soon because I am SO done with diapers! Maybe this summer will be a good time, when they are wearing less clothing, can run around the backyard with nothing on.....haha!
